Mrs. Betty Cooke Stokes, 91, of Morganton passed away Monday September 3, 2018 at College Pines Nursing Home following a long and full life.
Betty was born February 23, 1927 in Buncombe County, NC to the late Shell Cooke and Minnie Pipes Cooke. Betty retired from Broughton Hospital as a social worker. She enjoyed RV camping and remained very close to the friends she met while doing so. She was also a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she was involved in many church activities while she was able. Betty will be remembered as an artist, and the crafts and paintings she created will be cherished by her family forever.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Excell Stokes; infant son, David Bennett Stokes; and brother, Doug Cooke.
Survivors include, her sons, William Stephen Stokes and wife Jane of Hudson, Richard Alan Stokes and wife Rita of Valdese, and James Dennis Stokes and wife Cherie of Lenoir; daughter, Carol Stokes Austin and husband Mark of Morganton; grandchildren, Brenda Cothern, Michael Stokes, Jennifer Corpening, Allison Mace, Shelley Mace, Josh Austin, and Tiffany Austin; eleven great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren; and sister, Anne Greene of Lenoir.
A funeral service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, September 8, 2018 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with the Rev. Barry Keys and Rev. Josh Lail officiating.
Interment will follow at Belleview Cemetery in Lenoir.
The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at Heritage Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Valdese at 500 Faet St NW, Valdese, NC 28690.
