Edwyna was born on November 4, 1928 in Burke County to the late William T. Russell and Faye Tillotson Russell. She remained in Burke County until the early 1950's and eventually relocated to Greensboro and began a career in nursing for many years. She was also employed by the American Heart Association for over ten years, and became known as the "Mother of CPR" for her teaching and instructing of the life saving technique at both the college and local high school levels. She was also an employee of the Guilford County EMS, and later returned to Burke County to work at Grace Hospital in 1993 and eventually retired from the Employment Security Commission. Following retirement she returned to volunteer at Grace Hospital, where her pride and joy was knitting caps and blankets for newborn babies. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, D.C. Stiles, Jr. and one daughter, Linda Stiles Westcott, and two son in-laws, Ray Westcott, Jr. and Harvey Miller.
Survivors include one son, David Christopher Stiles and wife Robin of Greensboro, two daughters, Patricia Miller of Morganton and Rhonda Rice of Drexel, and one sister, Dorothy Beam of Woodstock, GA. Also surviving are two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
