Mrs. Elizabeth "Lib" Caruso, 83 of Valdese, traveled from this world into the arms of God on Wednesday, June 12, 2019.
Lib was born on October 27, 1935 in Burke County to the late Wade and Isabelle Huffman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Page and Carlton Caruso. Lib was the baby sister of her five brothers: Guy, Albert, Roy, Wade(Jay), and Osborne Huffman, who preceded her in death as well.
Lib fulfilled her lifelong dream by becoming an accomplished nurse. She completed her training at Western Piedmont Community College and her B.S. in Nursing from Western Carolina University. Being a dedicated caregiver was the essence of her being. She was instrumental beginning the Good Samaritan Clinic in Burke County. She also applied her nursing skills at Valdese General Hospital, the dialysis unit in Lenoir and at SAFT in Valdese. Later she became an Infectious Disease Control Nurse with Blue Ridge Health Care.
Elizabeth Caruso leaves behind a legacy of a well lived life of love, generosity and care giving. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Susan Page Ogle and husband Wade of Valdese, and a special stepson, Carlton E. Caruso Jr. and wife Karen of Valdese. Also surviving are four adored grandsons; Alex Ogle and wife Jennifer of Mooresville, Sam Metcalf of Hickory, Jeffrey Ogle and wife Ana of Asheville and Wade Ogle and wife Lori of Morganton. She was extremely proud of her great-grandchildren; Kaitlin, Ashley, Carter, Cannon, Chloe, Santi, Ana Leigh, Brady, Braxton and Tad. Lib is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Larry(Brenda) Huffman, Kathy(Jerry) Icenhour, Maria(Rick) Bernard, Albert(Jean) Huffman, Nidia(Harry) Black, Veronica(Bob) Crenshaw and Rick Huffman.
Lib was a member of the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Valdese for many years. She loved her church family, and her heart lay in her love for the Food Pantry. On Sundays, Lib received a great blessing by taking the church altar flowers and making assorted arrangements for the shut ins and church family in nursing homes. Often times, she took her church friends to doctor appointments and circle meetings.
Lib was attractive, stylish and well kept in her personal appearance. Her house was immaculate, and her yard contained a plethora of flowers for every season. Her home was always a comfortable, welcome refuge for all who entered. She was gracious in welcoming family and friends into her home for food and fellowship. A small gathering of six or eight could be turned into fifteen or twenty to Lib's great delight.
Lib was endowed with many friends because she was a friend to many. Her mantra seemed to be " How can I help?" She was never without a casserole or some other savory dish in her freezer, ready to take to a shut in, a person recovering from surgery, a sick or bereaved friend or acquaintance. Indeed Lib personified the very essence of the Biblical Martha. Lib's beloved friends were there to give comfort, strength, laughter, and prayers during her final months at College Pines.
A celebration of Elizabeth Caruso's life will be held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Kevin Frederick officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Pioneer Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Waldensian Presbyterian Food Pantry, 109 Main St. E., Valdese, NC 28690.
All who have known and loved Lib Caruso can take comfort in knowing that as she passed from this life to life eternity, we know as Paul said, " You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith...., now there is in store for you a crown of righteousness". May our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend put her soul at ease in the cradle of our Lord and Savior for eternity.
