Mr. Robert "Alabama" Buckingham Whitney III, 74, of Valdese, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, following a period of declining health.
Bobby was born November 26, 1943, in Alexander, Virginia, to the late Robert Buckingham Whitney, Jr. and Wanita Johnson Whitney. Bobby loved to talk about his childhood spending time on his grandparents farm in Georgia where he enjoyed riding the tractor and all the other farm activities. He loved people, talking to them, and getting to know them. His memory was a gift from God, as his closest friends will remember. He served in the Vietnam War and was eager to talk to other veterans. He learned the trade of brick mason and later small engine repair. Bob was a strong, honest, hardworking, fun-loving, generous man, always ready to help someone. He loved living and his wife of 45 years but was ready to go to be with Jesus, his Savior, on August 8th. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends that he made over the years that became his family
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Robert Buckingham Whitney, Sr., Alyce Mae Hayden Whitney; Emmett Johnson, and Sally Victoria Smith Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Moyers Whitney; siblings, Alyce Victoria Russell, Richard Johnson Davis, and Sarah Lonne Davis; and nieces, Amy Danette Till, Cassandra Lonne Poe, and Stephanie Nicole Poe.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Service, with Rev. Mike Wakefield officiating
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675.
